I made one more plant order. I know, I know. To be fair, a lady posted a lot that included Haunted Heart and I missed that iris in the presales- it was sold out everywhere. So yeah, sorry, not sorry.. lol I don't even know what is coming in the rest of that bundle, I saw Haunted Heart and bought so fast. Hopefully not a lot of duplicates- thankfully there are so many irises that it's hard to run into duplicates other than the most prolific varieties. If you want to be immediately obsessed with an iris, pull up a photo of Haunted Heart. She's absolutely dreamy and one of the few cases where she already has an assigned spot before I've even ordered her.
Last year I ordered 3 of those black lace elderberry with the idea that I would make a little goth garden. They are still in my 'grow you tiny twigs' bed. I have a really dark foliage hardy hibiscus as well and a couple dark foliage dahlia. But, you know, I'm frugal which is the nice way of saying cheap so I buy these things little and grow them out. I really thought the elderberry would be a lot faster because the regular native ones are super fast growers- but, these and my lemon lime are only 12" high, purchased in quart size late last year. Obviously- lemon lime is in my bright area, not the goth garden. I wish I could have just bought large ones locally- but they only stocked 'laced up' which I did like, but, those ones are not edible and allegedly black lace can be used as an edible plant- following usual elderberry precautions of course.
Other dark foliage that might make it into the goth garden includes the hardy geranium Boom Chocolatta and Astilbe Chocolate Shogun- I'm growing those out as well- sort of wish I'd bought at least three of each, but, clearance table browsers can't be too picky with those things. I bought a mixed lot of bareroot astilbe and not all have sprouted yet, so far I believe I have one Chocolate Shogun- hopefully there will be more because that would be nice in there.
With all that dark foliage - I really wanted some greys/grey lavender to really pull it all together and so Haunted Heart was top of my list.
Anyhow- I was good last night, I got 7 roses into the ground, pulled two 5 gallon buckets of weeds. This morning I planted out 12 herbaceous perennials - mix of milkweed, agastache, salvia. Also cleaned up the trellis and planted my moonvine starts out there. So, there we go, I planted more than I ordered. I just need to do that every day for about the next month.
