Plant Hauls - Old House Dahlias - Dahlias

This was a new vendor for me, but they have been around a long time selling dahlias from Tillamook, Oregon. These were preorders, 2 separate orders, I believe placed around early February. They arrived to me here in zone 5 on April 21st.

These were shipped priority mail using standard USPS priority packaging. There is no option for combined shipping on the website, if you place two separate orders you get two separate boxes and two separate shipping charges. Shipping though was reasonable, I believe $9.95 was the shipping charge per order.

My first order was the following dahlia tubers:

  • Bed Head
  • Pooh
  • Vassio Meggos
  • Verrone's Obsidian
  • BJ's Rival
  • Bloomquist Jean
  • Candlelight
  • Hollyhill Black Widow
  • Pam Howden
  • Sherwood Peach

My second order was for the following dahlia tubers:

  • Hollyhill Bewitched
  • Hollyhill Art W
  • Hollyhill Big Red
  • Hollyhill Bill M.
  • Hollyhill Contessa
  • Hollyhill Cotton Candy
  • Hollyhill Electra
  • Hollyhill Finlandia
  • Hollyhill Gingersnap
  • Hollyhill Laurence
  • Hollyhill Margarita
  • Hollyhill Pixie
  • Hollyhill Red Spider
  • Hollyhill Six in One Yellow
  • Gitts Attention
  • Gitts Crazy
  • Goshen Giant
  • Chick a Dee

Happily, all tubers ordered arrived with no substitutions and most were firm with a visible eye. There were a couple lightly wrinkled and a couple with no obvious eye- however there were a couple knocked off sprouts in the box. The lightly wrinkled seem large enough to root before there's an issue.

Packaging is minimal but adequate- USPS priority box and then all the tubers together in one compostable bag containing what seemed to be maybe coco coir. Bag was padded above and below with wadded newspaper. A couple sprouts got knocked off- but there isn't much that can be done to prevent that.

Tubers are stamped with their names. Included in the box is your invoice, the warrany information and a planting guide that needs to be followed for the warranty to be honored. I rarely bother with a plant refund, so I did not read that in depth.

Overall- this is a good place to order for older unique varieties, lots of fun cactus form and other spiky types that maybe don't get as much publicity as say the waterlillies lately. Tubers are very affordable and are shipped affordably. I generally prefer my tubers individually bagged in the event something pops up with gall- however, many places I order from ship them together. I would order again if there was one I thought I needed.
