Plant Hauls - Walmart - Strawberries - cheap bagged plants
I've read a lot about strawberries lately trying to pick some good varieties. I have a 4x8' bed of strawberries out in the garden, but they are comprised of ones I rescued from the lawn. They are good- but not great - so I'm on the quest for a great one. I had a lot of people suggest Quinault and was surprised to see exactly that variety in the cheap bagged bareroot section at Walmart.
First thing you should know, many of these packages contain roots too dry to be viable. However, if you are careful and take your time, you can find some viable ones for this steal of a price. Pictured below is what you are looking for. If you lift the bag, you should see some plants trying to sprout. It's unfortunate that the bag is green as it makes it very hard to see if the bag contains viable roots. Roots are stored cool and moist, generally around 42 degrees. Once they arrive at your local store, they start to dry out and the warmer temperatures trigger them to sprout. However, wait too long and those new sprouts will be dessicated and it will be hard to save them.
Here is the cut open bag- which did contain 10 viable roots. Now, these were smaller crowns than the strawberries from Johnny's Seed, but the Johnny's Seed ones were about $2 per crown while these were around .39 cents. You do have to be careful selecting as well, I probably looked at 5 bags very carefully before finding a good one.
